Dulwich 161 all out in 56 overs
Malden Wanderers 114 all out in 41 overs
Result: Dulwich won by 47 runs (13 points)
A magnificent spell of fast bowling by Dave Burton, well supported by the left arm spin of Vikram Banerjee, transformed Dulwich’s game at Malden Wanderers and turned possible defeat into victory by 47 runs.
Put into bat by the home team, Richard Farrow and Anil Mahey started confidently putting on 29 for the first wicket before Mahey fell. Dai Williams scored 13 of the next 15 runs but after his dismissal Malden’s Colin Mander and Stewart Walters tightened the screw, conceding only four runs from eight overs. Farrow and M. Sunny Singh gradually regained the initiative and Dulwich took lunch at 69 -2 off 30 overs. Rain delayed the restart by 50 minutes which added to two earlier shorter interruptions, reducing the innings to 56 overs. Farrow and Singh took the score to 101 whereupon Farrow was run out for 42 and Singh was lbw next ball for 27. Skipper Mark Kelly added 17 to take the score to 131 but wickets then fell steadily. Usman Jan, with 25 was the only other batsman to make double figures as Dulwich were dismissed for 161 off the last ball of their innings. For Malden, Walters had bowled almost unchanged for 26 overs to take 4-82 while slow left armer Giles Puckle, the Malden skipper took 3-39.
In reply Malden keeper Dan Euston made 17 of the first 24 before being out lbw to Banerjee on the stroke of tea. Fellow opener Spencer Stevens was second out for 15 being bowled by Cambridge student, Banerjee with the score on 47. Surrey batsman, Walters was well into his stride and in company with Sean Byrne seemed to be leading Malden to an easy victory. The pair had added 47 to take the score to 94-2 with 19 overs in hand when Banerjee struck again to have Walters by Graeme Hough for 39.
The fall of the third wicket was the signal for the return of paceman Burton to the attack who responded by removing Byrne for 25 with the score on 104. The last seven Malden wickets then went down for ten runs in ten overs as Dave Burton having been wicketless for 34 runs in his first spell of 12 overs, now produced the remarkable figures of six overs, five maidens, one run and five wickets in his second spell. Vikram Banerjee picked up the other two wickets to finish with 5-57 of sixteen overs. Both Dulwich bowlers have now taken twelve wickets in three games with only one other wicket falling to a bowler. The lively Geordie keeper Ryan Birbeck had another good game taking three catches as Malden were dismissed for 114 to give Victory by 47 runs with four overs to spare.
Captain Mark Kelly was very pleased at the pulsating outcome to the game but the local boy was not the only successful skipper leading Dulwich as five Dulwich teams won their games. On a historic day for the club, the thriving South Londoners fielded seven senior teams on one day for the first time in their long history. Even with the Ashes bonus, local commentators have never seen such widespread developments in Dulwich cricket. The win takes Dulwich into mid table and next week Kelly’s heroes take on Weybridge at home in the Shepherd Neame sponsored Surrey Championship.
