Sat 8th Jun – 1st XI v Beddington
DULWICH 197-9 (66) lost to BEDDINGTON 198-5 (53.5) by 5 wickets
Dulwich were outplayed in their Ryman Surrey Championship Division 1 match at Beddington, and went down to defeat by five wickets.
Dulwich chose to bat, but found scoring difficult against accurate bowling, while losing the wickets of South African OP Jonathan Lewis for 12, Ed Carlton for 16, Frankie Brown for 5, and Anil Mahey in the last over before lunch for a dogged 39, off 111 balls. Lunch was taken at 83-4 in the 39th over, and the wickets of keeper James Balmforth for 14 and Tom Fox for 4 soon followed to reduce them to 106-6 in the 45th. A partnership of 61 in 14.2 overs for the seventh wicket between Ben Rosser, making his first team debut in the Championship, and Tom Savill lifted the score to 167 after 59 overs when Rosser fell for an impressive 41. The skipper fell three overs later for 36, and was quickly followed by Naeem Iqbal for a single to make it 178-9 after 62 overs. Salaar Waqar with 16 then dominated an unbroken last wicket stand with James Bridgland, who made 3, to lift Dulwich to 197-9 after 66 overs.
Beddington were left with 58 overs to get the runs, and Simon Lewis, with 56, and Tom Bevan, 61, both scored half-centuries (a feat that no Dulwich player has yet managed in the Championship this season) as they reached their target for the loss of five wickets with 4.1 overs to spare. Fox was the most impressive bowler, taking the first wicket and conceding only ten runs off seven overs. Lewis, Savill, Waqar and Iqbal also picked up a wicket apiece as Dulwich employed eight bowlers.
This defeat leaves Dulwich still without a win after five matches, and they will be hoping to rectify this next week, at home to Normandy, who are currently fourth.
