May 15th – 1st XI vs Beddington
Beddington 139 (44.5) Dulwich 122 (46.2)
A captain’s knock by Anil Mahey, who carried his bat for 50 not out, failed to gain enough support from his fellow batsmen as Dulwich slid to defeat by 17 runs in their Shepherd Neame Surrey Championship Division 2 match at home to Beddington.
The visitors chose to bat and openers Ian Gamble and David White started confidently reaching 53 after 12 overs. Left arm spinner Richard Beeching then struck in his first over, removing Gamble for 27. Tom Peacock took the next 4 wickets, bowling his 10 overs straight through for only 17 runs, as Beddington declined to 80-5 in the 26th over. Andy Murphy joined White to add 46 for the 6th wicket in 15 overs, until James Soulsby removed White for a painstaking 30 and then Murphy 2 balls later for 20. He followed up with the last 3 wickets in a spell of 5-6 to finish with 5-29 off 9.5 overs. Beddington had lost their last 5 wickets for only 13 runs to be all out for 139.
In reply, Dulwich lost wickets steadily with the first 5 batsmen to be dismissed managing only 10 runs between them. At 50-5 Mahey was joined by Peacock and together they added 40, until Peacock fell for 23 with the score on 90. The last 5 wickets then went for 32, leaving the skipper stranded on 50 – comfortably the highest score of the game. The third highest score in the innings was 5! Dulwich’s score was boosted by 30 extras, though this was less than the Beddington innings, where extras had been the top scorer on 34.
Next week Dulwich are away to newly promoted Chessington and will be looking to record their first win.
